Off the beat: The Great Mashed Potato Cook Off Oct. 9 in Wimberley

Entries are still being accepted. Go the
website for directions, entry forms, and a hilarious potato song video

The 2nd Annual Great Mashed Potato Cook Off and Fall Peace Festival takes place this coming Saturday, Oct. 9, at the beautiful hilltop Unity Church of Wimberley – 10 am to 4 pm.

Texas has thousands of BBQ and chili cook offs, but who does a MASHED POTATO COOK OFF?? No one, we are informed, not in Texas. This is proof of that bumper sticker we sometimes see around that says "Keep Wimberley Weirder."

The event promises to be a lot of fun for adults and kids. Lots of home cooked potato recipes and dishes will be judged and a $100 cash prize awarded to the best of show. Games for the kids, grilled burgers, refreshments and tours of the church grounds will be available for all. Belinda Zent (Busy B's Home Baked Goods) will be on hand with her booth and wonderful array of breads and pastries, including her famous potato bread.

Live music starts at 10 – a great lineup, including local artists Andrew Hardin, Amy Cox and her band The Distractions, The Clayton Brothers, Gypsy Moon, Lori du Jour and Friends, Kim Miller and Kit Holmes of Austin.

Judging of mashed potato entries starts at 12 noon. The three celebrity judges will be introduced around 11:45. They are pretty famous as cooks in their own right: Linda Allen of Linda's Fine Foods, Robin McCullough of Wimberley Café on the Square and Dr. Bert Cobb, well known San Marcos physician and allergist. (They needed a doctor around, just in case someone eats too much leftover mashed potatoes.)

Bring your appetite and bring your friends and family members. The church is charging a $5 parking fee.

[Note: The RoundUp is on a short break. We'll be back soon with more local political and other news coverage. Keep your comments coming.]
