WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The killing of Osama bin Laden sharply boosted President Barack Obama's image, improving Americans' views of his leadership and his efforts to fight terrorism, a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday found.
About four in 10 Americans say their views of Obama improved after he ordered Sunday's successful military operation in Pakistan to kill bin Laden, the mastermind of the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington.
The boost to Obama's popularity from bin Laden's death could be short-lived as voters focus again on the economy and lingering unemployment – top concerns heading into 2012 election campaign."There is no evidence the boost in his approval rating will last until the election, but an event like this could position Obama as more of a military leader and give him more authority," Ipsos pollster Julia Clark said.
That could help put a long-term dent in Republican efforts to paint Obama as weak on national security and indecisive in reaction to the "Arab Spring" protests in the Middle East and North Africa.
The poll was conducted Monday with a 1,010 adults in the United States interviewed online.(Editing by Alistair Bell and Deborah Charles)

First the long form birth certificate. Then the Harvard course work transcripts. Now the bin Laden assassination.
If Obama has to prove he is a good American citizen anymore than that he will either have to wear a Mike Pence mask or start having an affair with Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachmann.
The birthers - having been pre-emted by the long form birth certificate, have now started to spread a new rumor. If you look closely at Obama's ears, it is clear he is a Vulcan, the mixed race brother of Spock.
And fortunately for the birthers, he can't just come out and say he is a Vulcan. So maybe the birthers will be able to obsess on that one until at least they find a Republican Party candidate that is suitable to run for US president against Obama.
I like Donald Trump. His nickname should be "The Rooster."
Of course 13% would give credit to George W. Bush for bin Laden's demise.
13% of Americans also believe that George W. Bush staged the 9/11 attacks. Or stole the 2000 Florida elections. Or was one of the greatest Presidents of all time. Or could put a sentence together. Or never was a member of AA. Or actually served in the military. Or wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Or had a brain of his own.
Or, and this one is true, looks like a smart man compared to the current batch of Republican politicians.
And George W. did call Obama to congratulate him.
Fox News is now saying the assassination of Osama bin Laden was ILLEGAL.
I'm so glad after 10 + years of supporting and justifying torture (i.e waterboarding), Bush's unilateral invasion of Iraq, Guantanamo, Abu Graib, firing unsympathetic conservative judges, blaming mexicans for our economic problems, the birthers, and the domestic spying that was the norm for eight years under Bush, that Fox News has finally become the spokespeople for the liberal values of by-the-book justice and integrity in all matters political.
And I'm sure the Fox News change of heart has absolutely nothing to do with Barack Obama as our President.
I would like to hear from all you Fox News, Russ Limbaugh, and Glenn Beck fans, along with you Second Amendment solution proponents, about the illegality of killing bin Laden.

Obama has decided NOT to release the photo of a dead Osama "been" Laden.
I know now it is a staged scam. It is typical of what inner city hoodlums do - they try to hide the body.
Odd because Geraldo was dancing a jig Sunday night.
Geraldo is the most balanced and sensible talent on Fox. He is an anamoly at that network.
