American Jobs Act carries big impact for Texas

Here's a summary of the Texas impact of President Obama's American Jobs Act. The White House's website has the full report at this link, http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/THE_AMERICAN_JOBS_ACT_Impact_TX.pdf

Cuts the payroll tax in half to 3.1% for employers on the first $5 million in wages – 390,000 Texas firms will receive the payroll tax cut.

Expands the payroll tax cut passed last December by cutting workers payroll taxes in half next year. A typical household in Texas, with a median income of around $47,000, will receive a tax cut of around $1,460.

$2.6 billion for modernization of highways, transit, rail and aviation that could support a minimum of 33,800 local jobs.

$2.56 billion to support up to 39,500 educator and first responder (firefighters and cops) jobs.

$2.3 billion to rebuild and modernize public schools supporting more than 30,000 jobs.

$114 million to refurbish and revitalize local communities.

$458 million to modernize the state's community colleges.

Reforms in the unemployment insurance system could help put the 329,000 long-term unemployed workers in Texas back to work. An extension in unemployment insurance will prevent 123,900 people looking for work in Texas from losing their benefits in just the first 6 weeks.

The Pathways Back to Work Fund could place 8,700 adults and 29,200 youths in jobs in Texas.

Just another Stimulus Bill as we have seen before. It is going nowhere. This Prez just doesn't get it. More spending and taxes is not going to create any jobs and it hasn't since he started this misguided approach. The Democrats would best be served by throwing this failed president under the bus and picking a new candidate for 2012 if they want to have a chance at the White House again soon.

Readers should notice that TEA - who clearly represents a sad example of the new right wing in America - does not honestly address the FACT that Obama's Jobs Bill proposes TAX CUTS for the MIDDLE CLASS while trading off TAX HIKES for the RICH and the ELITE.

And these are the same right wingnuts that will sacrifice the economy and the middle class and poor just to see Obama fail.

The Republican Party has brainwashed their compassionless base voters into thinking that no matter what Obama proposes, it is wrong.

These are the same wingnuts who scream in approval and confirmation when at the Republican debate someone is asked if it it OK to let people die who don't have insurance.

These are the same wingnuts who want the elite religious right to use big government fascist laws to force women - mostly minorities and lower income women - to undergo cattle-like abortion sonograms that violate individual liberties, family values, and the privacy of doctor-patient privacy.

These are the same wingnuts who boo Ron Paul when he tells the truth at the recent debate about why Arab terrorists attack us - because we have military bases on their holy land.

These are the same wingnuts who would rather have a blatant dishonest big government women hating philandering hypocrite like Rich Perry be the GOP nomination for President simply because the much more qualified Romney is a Mormon.

These are the same right wingers who think evolution is an atheist science and probably believes that the Flintstones TV program is an animated documentary.

I think it would be a much wiser solution if we threw the entire Republican Party and their fact- haitng voters under the bus.

They are no longer human beings.

I fully agree with you.

The American Jobs Act sounds good. Perhaps we need to encourage the hired help to vote FOR the American Jobs Act of 2011.

And where is the money coming from this time? Are we borrowing from China again? Unless we are getting some unknown income that we don't know about, this is simply more expense on top of massive debt.

Stop sending money overseas with wars and rebuilding democracy elsewhere when we need the dollars here.

Did you tell George W. Bush that between 2002 and 2008?

If not, you are part of the reason we are where we are with our huge budget deficit.

Just a thought.

The "thought" you share is insignificant. Yes, I said the same thing to the Bush administration. In fact I never voted for Bush because I knew what the man is and what he stands for.

So?

Is that the best you got???

Mr. TEA, while you were sleeping and collecting your social security your President Dubya contributed to the 9-11 attack and 7 years later allowed the US and world financial system to nearly collapse. KAPUT.

I don't see how anyone can realistically expect President Obama (or any president) to dig our nation out of its biggest economic calamity since the Great Depression in three short years. The president at least is trying while his Republican opponents have only one thing on their collective minds--to make sure he fails.

Republicans have become the biggest traitors to our country. The American Jobs Act happens to include many of the programs Republicans have supported in the past. So what's their problem!

Go out and try to tell an out of work teacher, cop or fireman it's just another stimulus bill. How dare you.

Really? Did you go to demonstrations against the Iraq war?

Did you try to convince young adults at high school job faires not to enlist - because the war was a lie and ultimately not worth dying for?

Did you send a letter to the IRS with your tax returns telling them to not give any of your tax dollars to the Defense Department?

Yes, I know these actions must seem insignificant to you, but c'mon Anonymous, instead of trying to diss me, tell us specifically how you told Bush that you didn't like his war schtick.

Was it passive resistance - or was it active complacency?

Just another few thoughts.

What problem will the jobs bill sustainably solve? None that I can tell.

Financial pundits are saying that consumer confidence is very low (meaning that consumers don't think the economy will get better any time soon and so are holding on to their money instead of spending it). Lower consumer spending means harder times for businesses.

Meanwhile the Fed Govt's own bureaux predict the unemployment rate for the country as a whole will remain over 8% until at least 2014. Number of new homes built this year is at the lowest since sometime in the late '60s. All in all, we're pretty pessimistic in our country concerning our economic health. No spending (except by national, state, and municipal govts which keep piling debt onto our heads and the heads of our grandchildren), which means no expansion of businesses/jobs. College graduates are forced to flip burgers. Home construction and all its attendant businesses are suffering.

Hard to be Miss Merry Sunshine these days.

You are correct. It is not a solution.

It is a symbol of a new direction that we as a nation must consider if we are to offer our high school and college graduate sons and daughters a chance to earn a fair income and raise a family that will have minimal health insurance and have the chance for a decent education that will help them compete in the new global economy.

It can be a start to change our dysfunctional economic system that is destroying the American middle class.
