Special to the RoundUp

In western Hays County, Texas, at around 8PM Sunday night 19 October, thugs trashed my car while I was having dinner with some friends.

Out in the country. Miles from anywhere.

My "Obama 08" bumper sticker was torn off the right rear bumper, a 20-lb rock was dropped through the back window, 2 stolen Obama yard signs were shoved through the gaping hole in the window, and a cryptic almost "OBAHA" (or something...) was scrawled in orange spray-paint on the drivers side front and back doors and windows.

It has been blogged here at Mock Paper Scissors (Thank YOU TexBetsy!) and here by Fran I Am. While a collection has started to cover the deductible, I must insist that any proceeds go to refugee children who lack school supplies here in Austin, a cause TexBetsy has been doggedly pursuing for years.

I have to hand it to the Hays county deputies for getting out to the scene of the crime quickly, and making sure to dust everything for fingerprints -- and, particularly, (in these dark days) for taking the matter seriously.

Also Kudos go to the WimDems -- the Wimberley Democrats -- who have been individually and collectively so supportive.

Our Democratic Party Precinct Chair brought this incident to the attention of the Hays County Sheriff.

I just saw the sheriff and told him about it. He really flinched. Said "That is not what we mean by America." Don't know if anyone will get caught but hope so.

The incident has also been reported to watchdog@barackobama.com and to our representatives in the campaign in Hays and Travis counties (Travis is where Austin is) but only a canned response so far.

In the meantime, your thoughts and prayers are appreciated and the best thing we can do is, please: Get The Word Out. This is Going Down.

But also, please consider the level of psychosis in these crimes:

Kilt bear cubs? Rocks Thrown Through Car Windows? DEATH THREATS? Spray-painted cars? 30 Slashed Tires?!?!

They must be deeply, deeply desperate. They need our compassion.

Correction: compassion and justice.

I feel sickened by this. Appalled and saddened.

Is the assumption one of that Republicans did this? Or just thugs? There are times when political parties are known for doing self-inflicted damage to promote their cause by pointing out "supposed" actions by the other party. (Not that I am saying this is the case in this particular situation.) Just what are the rest of the facts?

I am so sorry...this is just crazy and mean.

Consider that these thugs have been listening to the Palen/McCain diatribes as their campaigns desperately cling on to the one thing they have left...hatemongering. You are very special indeed.

Hi -- as the owner of the car, I can confirm that it is just a hunk of metal and can be fixed. I fixed the window this morning. The hate of the hate crime ... really only hurts the hater.

And the attempt at voter intimidation well...it just didn't work. It's only galvanized my determination to phone bank like crazy this weekend.

And the outpouring of good wishes and support from the larger Wimberley community is -- well it's just so beautiful that I am just overwhelmed and very, very grateful. The phone calls and emails and words of support and encouragement have been just amazing. Thank you all so much!

I guess the guy in this story is one of those who have been listening to McCain and Palin's "diatribes". Or maybe he decided to vote his choice, and some close-minded bigoted supporter of Obama decided to do to his car what some local delinquents did to the person's car in Hays County. Why cheapen the election by blaming the candidates for your misfortune? It is the local scumbags that did this, not the candidates.

McCain/Palin haven't been "diatribing" any more than Obama's henchmen who go around playing Black Shirt to anyone who dares question the "Messiah" (oh please...as if.)

this sounds like the same person in my Wimberley country neighborhood who keeps stealing and defacing the Obama /Biden signs at the entrance to the subdivision. What is the message here? I have also noticed Obama signs in yards one day and gone the next. I don't know if these residents simply changed their minds overnight or that the signs were stolen. Perhaps someone just wanted the sign for their own yard. No matter really, it is all sick behavior.
what the heck does this mean?-- "McCain/Palin haven't been "diatribing" any more than Obama's henchmen who go around playing Black Shirt to anyone who dares question the "Messiah". Obama's Henchmen? I missed that Rush Limbaugh or Fox news report. please EVERYONE use factcheck.org from now until the election and ever thereafter. Don't rely on mainstream news or God forbid, email circulation for your information. Check your facts. Make intelligent choices, don't be ignorant. Most importantly, be nice, play fair.

This not political. This is about three lost kids who are sadly misguided and do not understand or have no respect for freedom of speech and personal property. These kids need therapy and outreach, not political typecasting and community chastisement.
