Letter to editor slams Republicans for opposing payroll tax cut

It looks like Smith, Canseco and Hensarling never saw a millionaire tax break they didn’t like

Note: Both the San Antonio Express News and the Seguin Gazette published this letter to the editor today from Melissa Dufresne of Guadalupe County: http://www.mysanantonio.com/opinion/letters_to_the_editor/article/Your-Turn-Aug-26-2011-2141510.php

President Obama has proposed to extend the payroll tax cut for low income Americans. Since the TEA Party acronym stands for “taxed enough already” you’d think that TEA Party Republicans would jump on that and agree with the President for a change. You’d think wrong.

Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) told the AP “It's always a net positive to let taxpayers keep more of what they earn, but not all tax relief is created equal for the purposes of helping to get the economy moving again.”

Rep. David Camp (R-Mich.), chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, said he also opposed the 12-month tax cut because it would cost the government about $120 billion next year if it were renewed.

According to the Washington Post the Bush tax cuts amount to about $130 billion per year so I guess that means Republicans will now be against renewing those too. Why aren’t we hearing Lamar Smith (R-San Antonio/
202-225-4236) and Quico Canseco (R-San Antonio/202-225-4511) coming out in favor of either continuing the payroll tax cuts or not renewing the Bush tax cuts? Is expecting logical consistency too much to ask?

It looks like Smith, Canseco and Hensarling never saw a millionaire tax break they didn’t like.

Millionaires don't have paychecks, this is the problem they have dividends. They sometimes think they're unemployed.

Vote your paycheck, unless you're making $250K + , you're in it with the rest of us that work for paychecks...

This election in 2012 is going to bring this out more and more... Hell, class warfare doesn't begin to describe the situation, these guys (Congressmen) are out to slaughter the economic fabric of the country and call it patriotic..

The Republican Party has become a seriously dysfunctional political machine that thinks with their asses.

Almost their entire agenda is to oppose ANYTHING Obama proposes, whether or not it is good for the average American or not.

Such is their political strategy: Screw America to make Obama look bad so they can put one of their own (mostly) idiots in the White House.

Any politician who is a "party" based Republican and who mirrors this mindless anti-Obama GOP line are the ones really destroying America's middle class, making Obama's inexperience and first term miscalculations even more problematic.

The Republican Party has literally NO solutions at this point. In fact, their policies will create public health problems and deepen our financial crisis with their out of touch austerity priorities.

Sadly, it also looks like the other party doesn't have goods answers either - especially when they try to appease and compromise with these nutcases on the right.

Well rocky since you have such great ideas of what's wrong with our government maybe you should run for office

Republicans are for totally eliminating tax on capital gains. That sort of income (from passive investments such as stocks) is what often supports people who are born into great wealth. And so if capital gains taxes were eliminated (and they are at the rate of only 15% now, no matter how rich you are), then many MORE fat cats would have to pay no income tax at all. (Most of them have big loopholes to minimize their taxes already.)

Another example of how our oligarchy government is by, of, and for the rich.

Rocky quit playing party politics. The Democrats were no better when the situation was flipped.

If you haven't figured it out yet, the representatives of the parties aren't interested in solving anything. The elected class are just trying to make sure that the game continues for their personal benefit, period.

The "Class Warfare" is so thick here you could cut it with a knife. Rocky, you must be a frustrated individual since your President and your Party have failed miserably to the point it makes even Bush look good and makes many of us miss Bill Clinton. Blaming the rich and privileged classes is all you Marxists really have at this point; you would be better served by just shutting up and doing some soul searching about your own motives. You do have a soul don't you?

I guess you and your ilk will always be with us to keep us on our toes but you always lose in the long run. I guess as long as you keep talking, we at least can identify the enemies of our system of government.

The fact that the various Anonymouses who attach inane labels to me and my honest and ACCURATE assessment of the political morass our nation is currently stuck with only proves my point.

The Anonymous who calls me a Marxist has absolutely no idea what a Marxist is. It is actually funny to the point of absurdly foolish.

And "quit playing party politics?" What planet do you live on, Anonymous? What do you think your Republican ilk does literally 100% of the time?

And, of course, the most obvious is the fear of using real names by those who attack me and others who write in the blog - who have the integrity to use our real names.

What are the solutions you dark shadow Anonymous right wingers have other than the same old failed Bush polities if what I say about the Republican Party is not true?

The "Anony-mooses" on this site are here to disrupt and intimidate rational discourse. It ain't gonna work!

Rocky has said nothing wrong. In fact, he has stated everything correctly.

Both major political parties have failed U.S. citizens and have destroyed our American dreams.

They have done so with the aid from and campaign purchases by the elite corporate and individual greedy bastards who think of little outside their wallets and power & control agendas.

All that and a society of extremists in every area of life. There is no moderation and little intelligent thought and perspective.

Rocky has nothing to defend. He hit "the nail on the head" and you all know it --- or should know it by now.

One person, even a President, can do little against the prevailing muck who control our direction.

C'mon petty last Anonymous.

You must be the camera sociopath who commented in the town hall article and now you are just trying to get even with Rocky for his challenge to your LWV bullying.

You are just very pissed off that Rocky is correct about the Republican Party.

The local right wing sure is a bunch of obviously spiteful neanderthals.

See, it's very obvious.

Republicans oppose payroll tax cuts for the average American - because it will add to the budget deficit.

But the Republicans love tax cuts for the rich and the corporate elite, which will certainly add to the budget deficit, because it is supposed to create jobs - which it clearly doesn't.

This hypocrisy is why Anonymous of August 31, 7:49 AM simply cannot comprehend my accurate and honest assessment of the Republican Party.

So now, let's see if someone on the right can intelligently explain in clear English (Spanish will do) why the Republican Party opposes a payroll tax cut that Obama supports if it is not simply middle class destructive politics?

Please, no insipid and diversionary attacks. Just a clear explanation from a good intelligent Republican.

How about you politicians out there? Got an explanation?

The Congressional Budget Office says it expects the national unemployment rate to be above 8% until at least 2014!
