The chart below, from the informative Texas politics website CAPITOL INSIDE, shows that incumbent Patrick Rose's campaign for state rep has topped $1 million in fundraising – nearly double that of his Republican challenger Jason Isaac. The two candidates hail from Dripping Springs. We're not sure if that's a record for a State House race, but it sure must be up there in the all-time rankings. The big question is, who wants Rose re-elected to a 5th term so bad that they would contribute over a million dollars? The other big question is, will it be the money and not the man or vice versa that wins the race? The vast majority of Rose's money is coming from outside Texas House District 45 (Hays, Blanco and Caldwell counties). We're picking up that despite Rose's fund raising advantage, his race with Isaac is running about even (among polled voters). This one will be a Princeton – Stephen F. Austin State U. fight all the way to the goal line.
Early voting continues today thru Friday, Oct. 29. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 2. For a complete schedule of early voting locations and times, and election day polling locations, go to this link at the Hays County Elections Office.

so this house seat is worth over $1,500,000 (primary included) to some folks. The job (and it is a job) pays $7,200, COME ON voters - it would be cheaper and more honest to just send this guy packing and have him register as a lobbyist. He could then stop pretending to represent the people in this district, take a load off his mind. He's Rosing to himself.
Wow! Jason Isaac has a loan for $350,000 ?
I wonder who he got this loan from...
He's done nothing to support bills his constituents have asked for (except for Roberts). Homeowners have asked him to support bills to reign in abusive HOAs. If you haven't noticed, every subdivision built in the last two decades out here has an HOA. They are bad when the developer controls them and they are worse when homeowners take over. A fellow legislatore (Sen John Carona) profits heavily from HOA abuse through his management companies (e.g., Alliance) which seek profit through accusations of "noncompliance", "fining", the priority of payment scam, transfer fees, and other schemes. Patrick won't help. Let's elect someone that supports his constituents rather than his fellow legislators' pocketbook at your expense.
Isaac got most of his campaign dollars, about 60 percent, from Hank Seale, who is a banking-software businessman from Dripping Springs. Seale provided more than $100,000 in contributions and two loans worth a total of $350,000. The one-year loans each have a 1% interest rate.
Why are the top elections noted here with Democratic incumbents? Aren't some Republican incumbent elections worthy of being watched?
Oh, by the way, don't worry about Isaac paying back the loan. After he's elected he can pay-off the loan with contributions provided by wealthy lobbyists vying for special deals and bills. That's the way most politicians do it.
I don’t know about Jason Isaac’s “loan” but ... Typically, a candidate will loan himself or herself funds to get a campaign up and running until outside contributions come in. Some candidates will list their spouse as the source of the “loan”. Regardless, these loans must be paid back according to Law and I know first hand the law is enforced. The candidate can keep whatever is left of the contributions, from the total such as Rose’s $ 1.179 million.

I agree and the only thing you left out is their (HOAs/POAs) foreclosing on someone’s homestead for not paying their maintenance fees and fines. Texas is one of the few states that allow this evil practice by HOAs and POAs. Rose has done nothing about these abusive owners associations, maybe Isaac will be more receptive to his constituents.
Anon 1, add to that $350K loan, a donation by the same individual of $100k
Anon2, sorry not every subdivison in the last two decades have HOAs, many true but not all; in fact no where near all.
Anon4, actully the procedure for HOA's foreclosing has been changed significantly in the past couple of years.
Mr. Stern, dead on.
The only limitation placed on HOAs and POAs foreclosing on a homestead is that they are not supposed to foreclose over non-payment of fines and the legal costs they incur. They can and do foreclose for non-payment of so-called maintenance and permit fees and accrued interest and of course any other legal fees they can drum up.
If you don’t think it is wrong to say, foreclose on someone’s $200,000 homestead for not paying $400 in maintenance fees, you are probably on an HOA/POA Board or one of their parasitic Lawyers.
Some POAs have placed a temporary moratorium on foreclosures for now because they fear investigations due to the current national foreclosure scandal. That whole issue needs to be investigated and more stringent controls need to place on these associations. I hope Isaac will investigate this because Rose has done absolutely nothing except talk.
What do you think Mr. Seale wants for his $$$$
Anon7people are made aware of HOAs in both their sales contracts and at closing. Read what's given you and pay your bills.
for your reading pleasure Chapter209 Texas Property Code
The chart lists the top 5 fund-raisers across the state, which includes Republican challengers.
Rose has raised around $3 million the last 8 years to keep himself in office. How do you think he's paying ALL THAT money back?
Yet all incumbents are Democrats. Interesting coincidence, isn't it?
Wow, so much to say and so little time...
Ok, All of the people being watched are democrats? Why does that worry you Petey? Aren't you the "smart" Republican? (i.e., RINO)Oh, well, kudos to Bob for doing that which is long overdue, quit saying it's all republicans who are deserving of watching, obviously there is mischief in the democrat ranks (hello kino!)
Subdivisions all having POA's? Nope, not a chance, some yes, all, no. Smoke screen. Should they be able to foreclose for lack of payment of dues? Hell no! Place a lien like everyone else.
Isaac getting a loan from some rich dude? Like Georgio Soros loaning all of his money to more crappy reporting from NPR and the Obama-maniacs? Ha! What a gas! You old fossil-heads! Hell maybe Soros ought to give some of his money to the Roundup - much better reporting for damn sure, and no one to fire except for Chuckles (who btw Bob, his reporting typically sucks - can't understand why you keep that flake around)
Easy on the drugs, last Anon who has "so much to say, so little time."
If you slow it down a little, you may actually make some sense.
Anon, it doesn't "bother me" as I just find it interesting. Maybe you need to ease off the sugar a bit.
Well, ya know Pete, what I find interesting is your biased outlook on all things Republican. I wish you and the writers of this blog would take more interest in the illegalites and unconstitutional action that is perpetrated in the name of democracy every day in Austin and in DC. Yet, when confronted with the truth of hypocrisy, the democratic party cockroaches head for the shadows.
Case in point, George Soros' multi-million dollar support of NPR - who are they going to give favorable reporting to? Soros' friends and political allies no doubt. Guess who those might be? President Obama, and the liberal left. And this is their idea of a fair and open media? Hardly, they turn on Juan Williams, but ignore others (Nina Totenberg can make outrageous comments about Jesse Helms and his family, but isn't fired and she's a news analyst as well?). Come on, all of you "fair" types are just full of crap; "fair" in your book is so long as the person you debate agree with you, then they are "fair" otherwise they are "fossil-heads" or "nazis" or "ignorant". Maybe we need to apply Hollywood style politics of blackballing those we don't agree with (as in what liberals do to conservatives these days in Hollywood).
Anon, I wish you would write in your real name. You are the one who generally turns the local discussion to the national agenda.
First off, I don't have a bias "against all things Republican." I support and am voting for quite a few Republicans including Dr. Bert Cobb, Jason Isaac and several others. So, already you are inaccurate.
Secondly, the RoundUp is a local Hays County blog and the editor opts to focus on local issues and discussions.
Just ask Bob Ochoa about it. He can attest that I have sent Bob many articles on national, state and local issues. Once in a while he will print one of my local commentaries but will not print the ones I send on national and statewide issues and problems. Bob, as chief editor, is entitled to develop the blog as he sees fit.
Anyway, there is no "fair" in love or poltics, just as there is no democracy or middle class any more. You need to get past it or start your own blog on issues and views that you want to cover, national and otherwise.
I’ve been reading and commenting on the “Roundup” for about two years and I have found out one thing for sure, Peter Stern has a thin skin and a thick ego. I have a great deal of respect for his comments and occasionally agree with them. His writings seem to portray him as an unhappy Republican. He has been described as a “RINO” but I think his comments actually point to a better label, “Non-Democrat”.
A "Non-Democrat" --- ? "Thick-Skinned," "Thick ego" --- ?
All labels and name-calling without any substance. What a surprise from another gutless anonymous.
Whatever gets you through the day. Just stop your 2 years worth of whining.
I could see contemporary Republicans pointing to me as a "RINO" but the truth should put them to shame.
I still hold to the Republican platform, tradition and definition of the Eisenhower administration. Those folks were true Republicans.
Republicans today would make Eisenhower squirm in his grave.
I am against most of the GOP platform in today's party; however, that does NOT make me any less of a Republican, in fact, it makes me more of a Republican than these contemporaries who have lost their way from party basics.
Sorry you can't seem to see that. If you want to try to justify yourself by labeling me or pointing to a thick skin or thick ego, go ahead.
However, you are quite mistaken. You misinterpret my passion about issues, principles, parties, opinions, feelings and concerns.
HA! Peter, I agree with the last poster - which is that you are extremely thin-skinned and do indeed have one hell of a large ego. Maybe you should begin posting under "Democrat wannabe!".
Look Petey, the only reason you are supporting Cobb and Isaac is because you don't like Barton and Rose. What other Republicans are you supporting? Ray? Cutler? Come on now Mr. Big Shot Republican, can't get someone else to agree with your nonsense this time? Yes, indeed, I do try to bring a connection of all things local with the national scene because the one reflects the other. To ignore what goes on in Washington when it is the same as what occurs locally but only on a grander scale is pure hypocrisy when the Ochoa's of the world will condemn the local issues that are just a reflection of what happens nationally. A local good ole boys system? How about again the Obama's enjoying the largesse of a local donor on 1826 who has dammed up Bear Creek and during the drought pumped water from several wells into the creek to create his own private lake? Don't believe me, just look in the Travis County line area on online aerial photos. There it is bigger than Dallas, and to boot, this issue was pointed out to Charles O'Dell of all people with a clear shot on a corruption charge for someone local. Guess what Charles did with it? Nothing. Why? Best guess - the guy is a local powerful Democratic Party supporter with money. So much so that Obama and company stayed at his house when he came through the area after he had been elected. At the same time this was going on, Charles and company were riding Jon Cobb's use of water from wells to water his baseball park grass on RR12. Cobbs's crime? He put the ball fields in with his own money, and was doing the community some good with his own money with no handout from the government. How dare he! Now when someone begins to report fairly on the local Democrats' hypocrisy than and only then will I believe that fairness in reporting is being done.
Amazing some of the idiots posting on this site. They are trying to eliminate any real semblance of discourse on issues.
The last anonymous should see a doctor for his "foaming at the mouth" and ranting mostly about Peter Stern and Charles O'Dell, but making no sense at all. Keep up the good work Mr. Stern, seems like you got some imbecile's panties in a wad!
Note to Bob: Here is another reason to force people to use their names. Do you think this jerk would spout like this using his real name?
Retribution may be a bitch, but some of these abusive commenters deserve anything they would get. Don't keep letting them get away with their poison, Bob.
Last Anon: It's hard to speak with an idiot, but I will try.
I am voting for Dr. Cobb and Mr. Isaac because I believe each is the better person for the job than Barton or Rose. If Cobb and Isaac were in the Purple Party I would still vote for them.
Finally, I really don't give a damn what you think of me. I don't write to try to be your friend.
Again, Peter, you aren't my friend, and why would I post my name on this bulemic blog when all it would do is to serve the purpose of allowing the Democratic freak machine someone else's life to make up lies about and ruin. No, if I thought that the Democrats were honorable people, I would gladly post my name, but only on blogs that have a code of honor will I post my true identity.
Again, you all prove my point - failure to make the connection between federal issues and local issues. This isn't about O'Dell or even elitist Republican scum like Stern. Instead it is about the hypocritical stances of Ochoa and "reporter" O'Dell who fail to point out criminal hypocrisy when they are offered it on a silver platter.
Instead of bad-mouthing everyone and bitching about everything on this blog, why don't you write your own as someone suggested to you?
Then why keep posting your absurd comments on this bulemic blog???
I am embarassed to live in Hays County with such obtuse people. How could any leaders rise above the muck who have elected and enveloped them?
Blogs that have "a code of honor"???
What planet are you living on?
It's interesting that you belittle and dishonor those who write on this blog and yet it is your concern to be honored "by democrats" on here.
You even verbally abuse someone who is not a democrat. I don't think Mr. Stern is a contemporary democrat or republican. I think he is grounded and in between of each party. Yet, that doesn't stop you from badmouthing his comments and attacking his persona and reputation. I think you are way off base with your attacks.
You, sir, are a coward and a bully. You hide behind your anonymity to badmouth and hurt others because they believe differently from you.
Just reading the responses to the comments that I post are fun. I read about plutocracies, theocracies, and democracies. But right here in Hays County, we have what I like to call the idiocracy, governed ("theoretically") by the likes of Stern and O'Dell. Why post on my own blog when you guys are so much more fun to poke fun at and get your goat?
For Anon6 and Anon10:
Chapter 209 of the Property Code was legislatively authored by Sen John Carona - owner/director of the largest legion of HOA management companies that engage in the unscrupulous practices complained of. You can rest assured that he authored legislation to protect his business practices, not your homes or your rights.
For Anon9:
An HOA can be imposed on your property without your consent after you purchase. The restrictive covenants are also often changed to your detriment after you purchase. The inevitable litigation and all the never-ending problems with HOAs are not disclosed at closing and generally can't be discussed because people wouldn't purchase the HOA property if it was. As to the bills, those bills are the HOA corporations - not the homeowners. The HOA corp is the biggest deadbeat in the subdivision. It does nothing but provide an avenue for unscrupulous HOA management companies, HOA board members, HOA attorneys, and other HOA vendors to rip off homeowners.
Anon, you nailed it. Our POA recently sent out a ballot for changing the association’s bylaws. Their cover letter was totally misleading as it stated that the change was just to let the POA use e-mails to communicate with the property owners.
It in fact did a great deal of damage to what rights the people had left. It did away with term limits for the board members and increased the board’s power in several ways. The POA only provided a copy of the NEW Bylaws and didn’t include the old ones. Only about 25% of the POs sadly responded by voting FOR the measure and obviously didn’t read the actual Bylaws or have the opportunity to compare them.
There is nothing good to say about HOAs and POAs. They live in constant fear of losing power and control over their members, the people. The good news is that our POA is about to lose 2 more of its sections to another more professional group.
Hopefully the new legislature will be able to overcome the special interests of the HOA corporations and reign in the excessive power of these out of control and destructive organizations.
