Texas sonogram bill shows its true color

Guess it must be more fun to drool and salivate over a bill that will change absolutely nothing except to intimidate young women who are considering abortions

Note:
Driftwood resident and columnist Peter Stern returns with a scathing appraisal of the Texas Legislature's "do-littles." State Rep. Jason Isaac of Hays County voted FOR HB 15, the sonogram bill, which passed the House Monday, March 7. Isaac is a co-author of the bill. The bill was received by the Senate on Tuesday.

Okay, so we now see how quickly state legislators can move idiotic bills like the anti-abortion bill through the House and Senate. Now, we should query why the heck they can't do the same thing with the REAL and urgent issues.

Guess the real reason is that they just don't want to. Why else would our problems continue beyond a decade without any significant positive change. Back in high school during the 1960's we had a word for these types of "do-littles." We called useless people "hooples." It's not dirty name-calling, but it makes the point rather well, even now.

Guess it must be more fun to drool and salivate over a bill that will change absolutely nothing except to intimidate young women who are considering abortions. Abortions that in REALITY concern no one but themselves and their families.

However, our "hands-off Texas, Obama" legislators have absotively NO PROBLEM whatsoever to stick their collective irrational and special interest powered proboscises intrusively into the daily lives of the average woman and man, like a bull ravaging in a China shop.

And I say that if Texas legislators continue to play this double-edge sword, then Obama should come down to Texas and go for it. Him and his Washington "hoople" Democrats should come on down and screw with us the way our legislators are screwing with our personal lives.

Voters allow legislators to do so since these self-important, almost useless, bureaucrats get reelected again and again. So, c'mon Texas legislative "hooples," why don't you do something to really help us? In fact, what have you done for us lately???

You know Peter; I used to think that the Texas Legislature only being in session once in two years was short changing us and questioned what they did in off years. Now after the last two sessions, I am beginning to think that every other year is far too often.

While I personally feel that abortion is extinguishing a life, I do not want our government dictating what we do in our personal lives or bedrooms. The question of abortion is to be answered between a man and a woman and their spiritual leader if they have one. Even though birth prevention as I chose to call it is abhorrent, unwanted or abused children is even worse.

Welcome back, Peter. You are always an intelligent and reasonable voice in the often misguided world of "neoconservative" politics.

Ya think those turkeys, including Isaac, could do something to relieve us common folk and small business owners from these ridiculous gas prices!! I remember he promised to do something to lower our school property taxes?

Well I'll tell you what, if the taxes and gas prices keep going up I'll know he hasn't made a dime's worth of difference for me and a lot of my neighbors.

Repeat please, Mr. Isaac: It's the LOCAL ECONOMY, stupid.

I was really hoping we'd get someone better than this. Pa"Trick" Rose was an Ivy Leaguer suffering from the "Napoleonic Syndrone". Now we have a religous nut disguised as a lawmaker. Surprise, surprise. "A chicken in every pot, and a cross with flag in every yard". Right, Isaac?

So, Mr. Isaac, is THIS why you really wanted to get elected: To try to shame a woman into carrying a fetus she did not intend to create, does she want, nor can she perhaps afford to raise, either financially or emotionally...to term?

And I thought you went to the Legislature to help us with our actual problems.

If Jason Isaac is reading this Blog he now knows what is wrong with his District. This Blog is frequented by a bunch of whining LBJ/Doggett type liberals that will never be satisfied with any politicians from this County. Let’s see, Green, Rose and now Isaac have been in their crosshairs. They are mostly leftovers from the 60s and 70s and female. They tend to be centered in the Wimberley area. Since all of their candidates except Doggett lost the last election and Doggett was trounced in Hays County, they are understandably upset. The good news is that they can’t live forever, and the new people moving in are more enlightened family oriented conservatives.

Congrats to all of yall who bought Isaac's BS hook line and sinker.

Be carefull what you wish for.

You, anonymous, 3/9/11 7:46 a.m.: The descriptive words and phrases you've chosen to use-
"whining"; "LBJ/Dogget type liberals"; "never be satisfied"; "their crosshairs"; "leftovers from the
60s and 70s"; "mostly females"; and "can't live forever".

I know who you are because I hear you speak this kind of rhetoric often. You go to church and pray weekly, yet you have an underlying, seething anger for those different than you. You won't have an open and honest political discussion with folks because you might be tempted to alter some of your views.

You make blanket generalizations about anyone who is different than you. This indicates to me a lack of capacity to understand other points of view; a lack of compassion and empathy.

A person such as this is not an asset to the community, in my opinion. A person like this is not a good role model to children and grandchildren, in my opinion.

You may have a white cross and flag in your yard, but in my opinion, you have hate in your heart. May God forgive you.

How can you justify your belief
In a God that's left you behind.
Your prayers simply hides the gap
Between the upper and lower class
And your faith just keeps you in line - in line, yeah

An amalgamation of old scripture
And christian thought.
What will that get you?
Not a hell of a lot.

Take a look at your promised land.
Your deed's that bill in your
hand.

The sonogram required before abortion is not the "jelly-belly" method, but an invasive vaginal
probe. Why?

"The sonogram required before abortion is not the "jelly-belly" method, but an invasive vaginal

I'll tell you why. It is because these male big government Republicans hate women - or anyone - who think for themselves and isn't willing to play the game of baby production so they can all grow up to become mindless consumers that buy products from big corporations - and to become soldiers willing to go off and fight their right wing military machine Christian Crusade wars. Look closely, this is where all these neoconservatives get all their sleazy campaign money from.

That is why they want to slash education budgets and not military budgets and big agribusiness and energy company subsidies.

Unions, my ass. I repeat my friend:

"Congrats to all of yall who bought Isaac's BS hook line and sinker.

Be carefull what you wish for."

Well, it obviously won’t be the first time something’s been in there. I don’t think abortion should be illegal but it shouldn’t be easy either. There needs to be consequences for your mistakes. Maybe they will think about a condom next time.

It's curious that HB 15 (sonogram
bill) was assigned to the State
Affairs committee after it was
filed -- not to the Public Health
Committee. Could it be because
the State Affairs Committee has
5 men members and 6 women (for total of 11 members), while the
Public Health Committee was given
13 members -- 12 men (!) and
1 woman?

Quick note on committees (not meant
to imply you don't already know
this): The House or Senate committees are the first places that determine whether a bill will
coninue through the legislative
system or not. If the committee
doesn't favorably report out the
bill to the full House or Senate
to consider, it's dead (the phrase
is "left pending in committee" --
as if the committee MIGHT reconsider the bill again later.)
So it was important that HB 15 be
favorably reported out of committee; therefore, it was
assigned to the State Affairs
Committee, which is 12-1 composed
of men.

The companion bill (=same subject)to House Bill 15 is Senate Bill 16
(sonogram).

In the Senate, the State Affairs
Committee (to which sonogram bill
was assigned) has 7 men and 2 women.

The sonogram bill has now passed
both the full Senate and full House, but the bills are slightly
different and will have to be
reconciled. The Senate bill is
slightly less draconian.

Oops!
In paragrah 1 of first "Interesting" I incorrectly
said that the House State Affairs
Committee has 5 men and 6 women.
That should be 12 men and 1 woman.

Likewise, the House Public Health
Committee has 5 men and 6 women.

to Anon 3:53 PM:

I don't think all women are in
favor of abortion, nor do I think
that all men are against them.
However, I have to admit that
nationwide, and especially in our
state, I think that more women than
men favor allowing abortion to
take place, even if they feel they
themselves could not have one.

The State reps and senators who
wanted HB 15 and SB 16 passed must
agree with me because they saw to
it that the committees to which the
sonogram bills were assigned were
more heavily seated with men --
by 12 to 1, in the case of the
House State Affairs Committee.

Anonymous 3/10 11:27 sonograms done at a very early stage of development, i.e. the first trimester, require a vaginal probe because the uterus is still deep in the pelvis and can not be seen through the bony pelvis. Once the baby grows in the uterus enough to elevate the uterus out of the pelvis then the abdominal sonogram transducer can be used.
