Note: Texas has reached its goal of having 10,000 megawatts of renewable energy capacity this year, 15 years earlier than scheduled, thanks to an ample supply of West Texas wind. According to a report (.doc) filed with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Friday, the Lone Star State has 10,367 megawatts of renewable energy capacity, and generated 21,594,278 megawatt-hours of clean electricity in 2009. Ninety-nine percent of those megawatts come from wind power. West Texas has some of the country's best wind resources, and has experienced explosive wind power development since ERCOT's renewable energy program was signed into law by then-Governor George W. Bush in 1999.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram
DALLAS — As the U.S. Gulf Coast battled a massive oil spill, former President George W. Bush told the American Wind Energy Association conference here today, "It's in our economic interests that we diversify away from oil."
"It's in our environmental interest," the onetime Midland oilman added. "And, finally, it's in our national security interest."
Bush, speaking at the Dallas Convention Center, said he believes that his grandchildren "will be driving electric cars, powered primarily by renewable sources of energy."
“I fully believe plug-in hybrids will be a transition to electric cars,” he said. Hybrids are combination gasoline-electric vehicles. Plug-in hybrids can be recharged using standard electric outlets.
Oil and natural gas will remain vital sources of energy as the nation transitions to a new energy era, Bush said.

That's hysterical that George "Dubya" "Oilman" Bush suggests diversification away from oil at the wind energy conference.
The man and his family already made FORTUNES from blatant profiteering from oil, so now investment in wind energy will make another one for the "great" man.
Who cares if Bush is promoting wind energy so he can now profit from it like he did with oil and natural gas as the energy sector whore President.
He is absolutely correct regarding wind energy and electric cars - as he was about illegal immigrants. At least he's not a total retard.
You guys seem to dislike the idea of making a profit, but love open borders and wind energy. You never mention nuclear energy as the answer. How about allowing drilling in the safer shallow waters of new England and Caleefornia? That probably won't happen as long as the Democrat party is in power.
Apparently, I care.
I'm not hinting that wind energy isn't a good idea. We live in Texas where wind energy is a major option and we have more wind farms here than in any other state; however, how many of us use it? It has not been implemented for most of us. The costs are too high, blah, blah, blah.
The point is now that Bush is "spitting nickels" again, is peddling his book and since his no long is President, it is easier for him to open his mouth.
He mouthed the words while he was President but didn't push for wind energy and other alternative methods.
During his 2 campaigns we heard about energy alternatives, but as President he did nothing to implement the words.
Whenever the man wanted something done he was forceful and pushed Congress to approve what he and Cheney wanted. With Bush as with many politicians it is only words.
You tea party afficiandos don't get it.
It is not being against profit-making. It is being against profiteering above the community good, by "stepping on" average citizens and crushing them financially.
Two and more decades ago we ran under several Republican Presidents and majority GOP Congress and we all benefitted from corporations and industries who made big bucks. But no more.
The Complex makes huge profits while the people lose.
